Fresh burdock root

Preparation directions
  • Select fresh burdock root so that you use one that is firm and not too soft.
  • Clean burdock root by scraping with the rough edge of the knife if the root is older, or simply wipe with a clean cloth if it is a younger root. If you are not able to find fresh burdock root, you could use 1 tablespoon of dried burdock root that has been dried and aged for at least a year.
  • Coarsely chop about 2 tablespoons of the root and place into a small stainless pot. Add 3 cups of filtered or spring water. Bring to a boil, then lower heat to simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Allow to steep for another 20 minutes. Serve hot. Drink throughout the day as a detox tea.

  • Wash the leaves thoroughly with cold water.
  • In a kettle boil 2 cups of water.
  • While the water boils, finely chop the leaves of the plant.
  • Cutting the leaves with a pair of scissors works better than chopping it with a knife. Put the leaves in the boiling water and bring the water to ¼ by boiling.
  • Add sugar or honey, as per your taste, and mix it till it dissolves completely. Remove the kettle from the stove and strain the mixture into a mug. Add the lemon juice to the tea and drink it hot.

How often to use

Burdock root is generally taken as an herbal tea three to five times per day.

German authorities recommend using 2.5g of finely chopped or coarsely powdered drug per cup of tea (1 teaspoon of powdered burdock root weighs approximately 2 grams).

 

Caution:

Remember, as with many herbal teas, burdock root tea is diuretic, so don’t over-consume.

It is recommended that the tea be infused in cold water first (for up to several hours) and then boiled for up to an hour and finally passed through a strainer. This long process serves to increase the bioavailability of some of the active ingredients. As a food, this root can also be added to soups

Besides, Traditional herbalists recommend 2-4 ml of burdock root tincture per day.
